Science and Technology, Bell X-1 Rocket Plane

Bell X-1 Rocket PlaneThe diminutive Bell X-1 rocket research plane was, of course, the world's first aircraft to break the "sound barrier" and achieve supersonic flight on Oct. 14, 1947.

Here a/c no. 6062, famed as General "Chuck" Yeager's "Glamorous Glennis," accelerates toward Mach 1 on its epic flight. The aircraft's conical nose, modeled on the lines of a .50 caliber bullet, and the shock diamonds from its exhaust trail, can easily be seen.
