Bladderwort (Utricularia L.), Symbol: UTRIC, Group: Dicot, Family: Lentibulariaceae. Bladderworts are a large group of native perennal, insectivorous or carnivorous plants indigenous to bogs, shallow water and open wet areas.They are short growing to heights of 4 to 8 inches. Flowers which appear from May to September range between 1/2 and 1 inch and are yellow as we see here, Submerged leaves (not visible in the photo) bear small round bladders. Animals touch trigger hairs around the mouth of a bladder. A trap door opens and the bladder expands, sucking the prey inside. Common bladderwort can be distinguished from others in this family by the short, curved spur on the flower as we see in this example.
